Voices From L5 – Hidden Figures

Something a little different this week, Voices reviews a film, Hidden Figures, with our friend from another podcast, Christopher Peterson. Chris runs the DecipherSciFi show, a brilliant podcast that examines science fiction and scifi concepts, definitely check it out!

Hidden Figures was a fantastic and inspiring film that examined some of the most important people in the space race and I felt it deserved a little discussion. The history of women, and WOC especially, is often glossed over or outright forgotten, despite these people being the shoulders upon which we stand.

Join us for a discussion on the history of woc in space, computing, equality and more!

Some subjects discussed in the show

Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. I mistakenly called her Valentina Tchakovski in the show.

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space ¬†– In 1983, 20 years after Valentina’s flight!

This page has a chart comparing computing speeds, placing the 7090 shown in the film at over 1 Million FLOPS, compared to a modern Playstation 4 which runs at 180Billion FLOPS.
